Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or a similarly sized casserole dish.
  2. Make the Hamburger Steaks
In a large bowl, combine the ground beefbreadcrumbseggWorcestershire saucegarlic powderonion powdersalt, and pepper. Mix until all ingredients are combined, but be careful not to overmix, as this can make the patties tough.

Shape the mixture into 4-6 patties, depending on your preferred size.

  3. Brown the Steaks
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the hamburger steaks on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. You don’t need to cook them through at this stage, just get a nice sear. Once browned, transfer the patties to the prepared baking dish.
  4. Make the Sauce
In the same skillet, add the onion and garlic and sauté for about 3 minutes until softened and fragrant. Stir in the cream of mushroom soupmilksour creamWorcestershire saucethymesalt, and pepper. Simmer for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce is smooth and well combined.
  5. Assemble the Bake
Pour the sauce over the browned hamburger steaks in the baking dish, making sure they are fully covered. Cover the dish with aluminum foil.
  6. Bake the Hamburger Steaks
Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the hamburger steaks are fully cooked (internal temperature of 160°F) and the sauce is bubbling.
  7. Serve
Let the dish rest for a few minutes before serving. Serve the hamburger steaks with the creamy sauce spooned over the top. This dish pairs perfectly with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Tips for the Best Amish Hamburger Steak Bake

  • Ground Beef: Using an 80/20 blend of ground beef will give you juicy, flavorful patties, but you can use leaner beef if preferred.
  • Don’t Skip Browning: Browning the patties before baking helps lock in flavor and gives the dish a nice texture.
  • Add Vegetables: You can add vegetables like mushrooms, carrots, or peas to the sauce for extra nutrition and flavor.

Variations

  • Cheesy Hamburger Steak Bake: Add a layer of shredded cheddar or mozzarella cheese on top of the sauce before baking for a cheesy twist.
  • Vegetable Hamburger Steak Bake: Add sliced mushrooms, peas, or green beans to the sauce for added texture and flavor.
  • Spicy Hamburger Steak Bake: For a spicy kick, add red pepper flakes or diced jalapeños to the sauce.
